Post our recent wildfires (2022 and 2023) there is now a similar green understory beginning to show beneath the thousands of acres of burnt evergreen trunks. Not ferns, but regenerating aspens. Rather than patches of brilliant yellow in autumn, amidst the dark green forests, future generations seem destined to see mountains of gold every fall.
When I was six and living in rural northeastern England, the ferns grew tall enough that when there was snow we could sit comfortably under them, instant homes. I think you would have loved them as we did.
