I love these birds, we have a pair that live in the trees behind our house.

I love pileated woodpeckers! We have a family that comes to our suet feeder. Last Spring the mother fed the babies there.
Oh! To see the babies! How lucky you are.

The Eurasian woodpeckers are all different from the American ones (I’ve seen Pileated on my one visit to the States) and the nearest equivalent is Black Woodpecker, which is widespread in continental Europe but not Britain or Ireland. We in Britain have nothing that big.
We have the downy woodpeckers which are much smaller. This particular pileated loves our crabapple tree in front of the house and visits it at least once early in the morning and again around dusk. He (?) is very noisy and the way he looks around after calling makes him seem lonely. Now that the bears are asleep we’ll put out a suet ball to cheer him up. Thanks so much for sharing what happens in your part of the world.
