Granite Steps

after miles of incline
on the Appalachian Trail
a reprieve of granite stairs

the dog tromps and romps
her tracks leave
a story of joy

our feet
in the leaves
do all the talking now

adding our tracks
to the worn path
alone together

we climbed
to see anew
our peaceful valley

part frozen
part motion
perfection

side by side
we round the bend
into the new now

a welcome
for wanderers
in the wild

under cloud cover
it hikes across
the landscape

the rock wore
twirls of curly moss
upon it’s hard headed crown

so wide and blue the sky
a universe of clouds
floats by

Through the dried grass
the wooden path
leads to winter.

The slope demands effort
while promising a summit view.
