Access to the house I grew up in was rather like that, and it was indeed in New England.
I was puzzled at first because the planter actually blocks the front steps, not the front door directly.
Ah yes – perhaps ‘entrance’ would have been a better choice. Coming from California – where front doors and front entrances are obvious I’ve often been confused here in New England, even after 30 years. 😉
