steps

New England Front Door

blocked by a planter
always at odds with easy access
please come in through the kitchen

now winter’s hardships
seem worthwhile
for they have brought us here

blooming at my feet
before the weather reliably warms
lightening and brightening each step

sedum climbs
stone steps
footprints of pink and green

with snow and flower buds
the cairn, moose antler and sun dial
mark and keep track of time

after a petal rain
the polka dot path
leads home

little bird’s
hokey pokey
turning himself around

summer left
her pink and yellow footprints
on the ripening meadow

the pine wears sleet
like many steps of bird’s feet
leaving the sign of peace

carry your troubles
down to the river
wash them away

where once the granite steps stood
a stone and lichen alligator now resides
