  1. derrickjknight – UK – I am an octogenarian enjoying rambling physically and photographing what I see, and rambling in my head as memories are triggered. I also ramble through a lifetime's photographs. In these later years much rambling is done in a car.
    derrickjknight says:

I love them in the hedgerows

  2. Sorry but that is not a dandelion but a coltsfoot, it does belong to the dandelion however and is certainly a worthy weed.

    1. Thanks for the identification Elaine. I hadn’t seen dandelions grow up through leaves with no foliage before – and that’s why! Coltsfoot is a wonderful name – but it doesn’t resonate as well with disparage. 🙂

      1. Ah, there’s the answer! We have a different dandelion here in Texas, but this looked like something other than ours, or the European dandelion. No matter — it’s just as lovely, though quite unusual, popping up through the leaves that way.

    2. I was just going to comment on that, thanks, Elaine. Coltsfoot sends up the flower first, the leaves come later.

  4. Rajiv – I have been around the block a bit. I've lived in four countries, and in many parts of my country. I have been fortunate enough to meet some really good people, and some really lousy ones, all of whom have taught me much. I am passionate about photography, writing, Indian history and continuing on this grand journey towards death.
    Rajiv says:

    Very worthy!

  5. Love this ode to dandelions, and other worthy “weeds”. My grandmother used to pick dandy-lions to put in salad or boil to death like spinach. 🙂

  6. prattlebypricilla – Notes About Me I truly hope the words I'm about to utter are in no way vain: Love Jesus Christ my Lord And Savior I am married I am a mother I am witty (May be the only reason I'd qualify as vain) I have an immensely odd sense of humor I'm Woodsy (You shall soon learn) Often take breaks for Coffee and Tea (.....And I'm back now) Deathly afraid of Creepy Crawlies
    prattlebypricilla says:

I for one have a deep abiding love for dandelions…’twas the first flower my husband gave me in grade school….a very worthy flower!

  7. Yes, Coltsfoot…I mentioned it and posted a picture of a huge bank of them last month around Easter in an earlier poem of mine. Golden and bright, like yours, growing in a dry, grey, barren soil. They are dazzling wee suns when all else is dull…lion’s tooth or dent de lion from the French.

  8. Dr. Denny Wilkins – Dr. Denny Wilkins professes journalism at a small, private university in the Northeast. He has climbed, hiked, kayaked, photographed, skied, and otherwise meandered aimlessly throughout the American West for decades. He has degrees in geology, environmental studies, and communication — and has tried to make use of them as a co-founder of the progressive cultural blog ScholarsandRogues.com. He’s broadly interested in how the world works and why it works that way. He hates writing, although he does like having written well.
    Dr. Denny Wilkins says:

What a striking contrast. Death, and life. A well-considered image.

  9. Leonas Lines – USA – A born and raised Midwesterner who traveled to Oregon in 2006 via the Oregon Trail route, fell in love with Oregon and now call it home. I am retired and pursuing my life long dream of becoming a Freelance Inspirational Writer.
    Leonas Lines says:

Love Dandelions. I have always felt God created them for children to pick as a flower to give to mothers. They are indeed a worthy weed 🙂

  10. judybarton – Still in love, complicated, almost stupid, interested to recognize herself. "Up to the age of eighteen years old everybody writes poems; after, only two categories of people may continue to do it: poets and idiots." (Benedetto Croce). Obviously I do not consider myself a poet.
    judybarton says:

I think they are Tussilago farfara and I think i like your words. Lol.

  11. pishnguyen – I love photography, writing, anime, my family, and my dogs. And I seem to spend a LOT of time chasing my muses around in circles.
    pishnguyen says:

    Beautiful!

  12. 2ndhalfolife – In the second (or really third?) half of my life now. Moving into the more crone stage: out of my head, into my soul. My magic is returning after many years of having lost it to the streets of life. There have been some very dark times, but these have made my journey rich with the stuff of possibility. Because out of darkness has come the glittering beauty of illumination. It has come with struggle and toil, and not without help--but I am here, and I am mostly in tact, and I'm here to share the rest of this journey with you all if you care to join me.......
    2ndhalfolife says:

    That is so precious!!

  13. Cynthia Guenther Richardson – Pacific NW – Hello fellow readers and bloggers, Writing has always been a powerful connector to diverse ideas and people. We each are a meaningful part of this beautiful, ever-widening web of life. Blogging enables more interaction, which I love even after 11 years of blogging posts on three different sites. For thirty years I was an addictions/mental health counselor and also a manager of home care services for elderly folks. Now that I have hit 70 and am more devoted to a creative life! I've published online or in literary journals/collections several times, including fiction and creative non-fiction pieces and poetry over five decades. Additionally, I was nominated for a Pushcart Prize for an excerpt of my novel-in-progress, Other than Words (the work gathering dust at present), about a mute dancer and her impact on her adopted community and a world-travelling photojournalist. I also am working on a connected set of stories about a close-knit town in northern Michigan. On Wordpress I enjoy writing about living richly despite (or because of) life's setbacks and a diagnosis of heart disease at age 51. Posts tagged "memoir" share spiritual adventures, interactions with nature, the healing of trauma's impact and challenges of writing full-time. Short stories and creative nonfiction, and poetry are favorite genres but I enjoy sharing my photography as well My hope is my offerings reflect a profound faith in God and our humanness which cloaks spiritual natures. I include myself as part of the diverse group of writers who discover and share the illuminating, positive experiences amid life's uncertainties and hardships. Let me hear from you when you visit--I appreciate your comments a great deal. Blessings and regards, Cynthia

  16. Excellent.

Forgive me quoting someone else here but your piece made me think so much of an Allen Ginsberg poem that I love, the end of which reads,

    Yellow, yellow flower, and
    flower of industry,
    tough spiky ugly flower,
    flower nonetheless,
with the form of the great yellow
    Rose in your brain!
This is the flower of the World.

Also, you may or may not remember me telling you last year about the Blackbird who was trying to build a nest on my porch light. Well… She is back… For the fourth year in a row, She is amazing.

    Thank you for sharing,

    Mark

  17. LB – I'm a woman who loves spending time on the motorcycle and in, or on, any body of water. I love traveling and reading, baking and cooking, taking way too many pictures, and enjoying my family and friends. Life is an adventure, and I want to remember and express my joy for it! This is a journal for me ... so I'll never forget the good times and to remind me of them on more challenging days.

worthy indeed! awnd I just love yello

  18. firefly1275 – Louisiana – V. Rose enjoys creating mystical characters and worlds, with a touch of the modern day world. When she is not writing or thinking up her next story ideas, she is enjoying South Louisiana sunsets.

  20. aradhnasethi – It seemed like just yesterday that I was born. WIth the blink of an eye, school and college were history... I was a full fledged journalist, and then the editor of an English publication. I had moved from India to Switzerland. I had changed from Miss to Mrs. I had turned from being a daughter to being a mum. My roles had changed from being a reported to the editor, from journalism to PR and more... What remained constant was my desire to write - this, despite having written and edited content for 18 years! So here I am - to write and share the flow of my thoughts... And I'd love to get feedback - like so many others on this platform :)
    aradhnasethi says:

beautiful thought – it’s not “just a weed” indeed – it brings along its message as you deciphered so aptly!
