Undaunted

by winter’s demands
evergreens refuse to release color or needles
and stand in defiant contrast to the ever greying landscape.

Rust

As winter edges closer
the woods become rust and grey.
Only the sound of one’s own footsteps
mulching leaves
interrupts the silence.

Fallen

There is no failure in falling.
While the descent may be hard
repose eventually softens all difficulty.
This is the grace of transformation.

Leaves Surrender

the first surrender is to color
the second is to be untethered by the wind
and the final surrender is to perish in form and replenish the earth

Our Two Chairs

Let us take our willow seats
and savor a few more garden moments with the geraniums
before the the frost comes and sends us all inside.

Current

Rocks and trees know not to struggle
but to simply stay until the appointed time comes to go.
Change is forever pulling or pushing.
Do not begrudge the current its way.

Looking Up

Beneath a canopy of green
lie down on the soft welcoming earth
and claim your special place in the world
by being there.

Discovery

On an ordinary day a walk reveals
the enchanted place
where the golden birch resides
totem for fairies and unicorns.
