the winter wind’s pruning
cleaved unto each other

roots
are their heritage
nurturing old and young

at the edge of the clearing
a family of birch
homesteads

mother and child
side by side
into the morning mist

distinct yet together
beside each other
through all

generations
of tractor seats
adorn the family barn

we gather
together in the warmth
of each other

Turkeys hurry
to get to the far side
of Thanksgiving.
