Old Rose

blossoms
gone to hips
still reaching for the sun

the falling
held
rain to ice

long grey day
and then a saving
flash of blue

part was missing
it made me love
what was left more

infinitesimal the progress
towards spring
until the sudden unfurling

cold highlights
the edge
of everything

each leaf
an unfurled flag
of optimism and renewal

even the leaves
came
two by two

blow down
found and saved
the drive to bloom upheld

both separated
from the tree
yet still entwined

at the Buddha’s suggestion
the wind and tree united
to place a reminder of faith

magnificence
masquerading as
the mundane
