this rain falls hard, pounding
this man rain roars
bent on reshaping our topography

the deciduous grove
in winter reveals
an intimate topography

full of peaks and valleys
riches and scarcity
and straight lines that wander

mountains upon mountains
the wood’s topography
ever changing

miles of mountains
populated only by trees
as it should be

here it is recorded
every nuance
of each day

colors smolder
as light negotiates night
landscape of the soul

neither even or fair
the lay of the land
embraces inconsistency

like the teeth of a zipper
brown and ground emerge
opening to spring
