How Winter Looks back

flakes freezing
as they fall
winter’s long goodbye

white hydrangea
the snow
before the snow

the north wind
singing in the grass
calling winter home

the storm
an instruction
of togetherness

measurements made
in the time it takes
for a snow flake to fall

dashing the hope
of early spring
winter returned

feathered ones know
winter says goodbye
in snow

flakes as light as air
and still the humble pine
bows deeply to winter

in the slow snow
the garden waltzed
with winter
