while in admiration
everything else retreats
and the now is peacefulness beautified

my soul is swaddled
in green and grey
the universe a comforter

the world rages
in the woods
peace reigns

snow in retreat
to the highest elevation
as spring advances

edging winter out
leaf buds sunning
as snow retreats

sunlight and shadows
the only guests received
preservation of retreat

cool earth dust baths
in the shelter of shade
chickens get-a-way

the sight alone
of cool blue
refreshed

black and white
morning light
darkness in retreat

Snow and silence
withdraw to the higher elevations
as Spring takes a dainty foothold.

Awaken when the woodpecker knocks.
Birdsong accompanies the noontime meal.
Eagle’s cries announce the surrender of day to dusk.
