Port In The Storm

our porch perch
is piled with snow
we are snug inside

petals or leaves
self or shadow
beauty is beauty

some of the color
that has left the woods
finds refuge on the island

the world rages
in the woods
peace reigns

a generous benefactor
the forest’s shade
on a hot summer day

an island
on thin ice
asylum for sunshine

come winter
they will encompass
my world

small space
large enough
for refuge

we gather
together in the warmth
of each other

sun and shade
sanctuary
at the lake

shelter in the rhododendron
waiting out winter
alongside flower buds

exposed by spring
hidey-hole the burrow’s door
awaits the asylum of iris

the mountain view
is my refuge
