The House Next Door

amongst the trees
their roof sheltering unknown
happinesses and heartbreak

each tree
a kind acquaintance
the woods my gracious neighbor

forsythia in bloom
throwing open
the proverbial garden gate

watching for the neighbor’s light
their curl of chimney smoke
to feel so not alone

even in the solitary woods
someone cared
to make good neighbors

you will find
their snowy roof
and Christmas pine

these slower times
allow for longer visits
with the flowers

solitude
inside community
being a part of the whole

Before the sun fully rises
the neighbor’s light across the way
is my kind companion in morning’s solitude.

The span links neighbor to neighbor,
above the river, across state lines.
Community knows no jurisdiction.
