where everything is holding its breath
sunlight is the only motion

a shaft of sunlight
holds the pond open

Winter persists
trying spring’s patience.

A storm slides in
and glazes spring
freezing her in motion.

As the earth softens
spring finds hospitality
in the primordial offering of mud.

Beneath March’s icy hold
Spring begins her rise to the surface.

Winter
white washes
the woods.

The cold bears gifts
the fleeting bloom
of an ice orchid.

Ice creeps across the marsh.
Pine trees await their white winter coats.
Cold sharpens the silence.

The creek moves fast cutting its way
through the meadow towards the river
trying to outrun the inevitable freeze.

Rushing ever onward
frigid but not freezing February waters
swirl around January ice.

The winter term is in session.
The pond provides a lesson in icy geometry.

The moment is caught in midstream
like the oak leaf
frozen in time.

Hope is the energy that beats the heart.
Light is its manifestation.
Love fills the space in between.

In the winter landscape
the snake with his skin of leaves and grass
hunts the water bird.

The river moans
as ice begins to creep from bank to bank
silencing it for the winter.
