For The Monarchs

there at the edge of darkness
the white flash of milkweed seeding
ensuring a haven for the butterflies return

come winter
they will encompass
my world

we watch
winter’s demanding dramatics
from inside our warm havens

shelter in the rhododendron
waiting out winter
alongside flower buds

Take haven
on the hot days
under a green canopy.

The February forest offers
ten thousand shades of grey,
haven for the mourning dove.
