Morning Rounds

senses cocked
in stillness
until the pounce

the morning’s exploration
a concentration
of stealth

wooded drive
fox and kit
greet and discourage

half covered
in her baby pelt
dashing toward adulthood

self possessed
the surety of instinct
edges out all doubt

emerging from their rock wall den
into the bright morning light
and hunting lessons

Spring sneaks in on little fox feet
greening the mountain while the world sleeps.
