Hoisted By Branch and Twig

each leaf
an unfurled flag
of optimism and renewal

verdantly
spring takes hold
birch raise their chartreuse flag

the barn endured
dutifully
despite the wear

white flags raised
the field
is surrendered

colour guard
young chard
ensign

the birch in worship
waving her prayer flags
for us

in service
to the season
cliffside color clings

long departed
still our freedom stands
on their sacrifice
