The Earth

dark and dense
like a good chocolate cake
first snow a powdered sugar dusting

the maple leaf
and snow negotiate
time for everything

first snow
a little shy
to be dropping by

quietest of sounds
autumn being sshh’d
first snow filling the woods

Snow covers the land with quiet,
muting the colors of Fall.
Winter’s paintbrush holds a thousand shades of grey.

The roses bow their heads
in respect to winter.

Seeds of generosity
fly away on Santa’s whiskers
before the first snow falls.
