retrieved from the garden in late October
now on January’s window sill
defying winter with your growth and green

cosmos defiant hoorah
as if to prove
the potency of bloom

tall stalk
laden with delicate blooms
defying wind and rain

raindrop acrobats
balance on the petal edge
defiant of gravity

defiant of the cold
the tulip
passionate with color

sweet hydrangea
her summer bloom lingers
on a honeycomb of petals

blazing colors
defy the drought
and celebrate the heat

vixen
in the window
refuses winter’s grey

outside winter approaches
while defiant violet
flaunts her ruffled skirts

defiant
the masked bandit
pillages the crabapples

by winter’s demands
evergreens refuse to release color or needles
and stand in defiant contrast to the ever greying landscape.
