Rising Temperatures

the smoke tree billows pink
as the door yard basks
in summer’s heat

first flakes
of our April blizzard
mid-sixties tomorrow

opportunity taken
the farmer feeds
his fallow field

wind and rain
have rinsed my world
autumn’s palette now returned

between the clouds and mist
blue and light sneak in
feeding souls and seeds

this rain falls hard, pounding
this man rain roars
bent on reshaping our topography

as our weather rises and shifts
winter still holds fast
to the horizon

last night’s rain
returned us to November
and snow begins again

thunder heralds
the gathering darkness
fronts collide
