perfectly round
made in the ground

out of the burrow
into the sun
stirrings of spring have begun

room in the cheeks
room in the stash house
work to be done

tiny feet
keep the beat
to the music of life

chipmunks sound
their one chirp warning
everyone down the hole to safety

who knew?
chipmunks are
the early birds

a breath of fresh air
to carry us through
to true Spring

crabapple snack
fuel for
nut gathering

chomp chomp
chubby cheeked
chipmunk feeds

scurry and hurry of gathering
or
savor the warmth of the sun

time and weather
downed the tree and birdhouse
chipmunk’s new abode

chin scratch
bare patch
April molt

All sorts and conditions
of acorns
constitute the chipmunks hoard.

Emerging from his burrow
the first thing the chipmunk does
is salute the sun

Stillness is my shield
as I hide behind a stem.
