outside the church
red leaves and red brick
join in prayer

fall has taken
most of her flowers
but not her elegance

length of birch
layers of brick
swirling of snow

we gather
together in the warmth
of each other

spring’s
green shoulders
holding up the sky

between the leaves
resides
the house of mysteries
