a dooryard full
of flowers

and trees breathing
the only sounds

winter wind
whistles through
front and back doors

small space
large enough
for refuge

gentle snow
softening the world’s
hard edges

phoebe
on her nest
of moss and dryer fluff

bright blue sky
hushed by clouds
quiet white surrounds

rest and nest
in a house in the woods
where wind is the nearest neighbor

the summer house
in winter entertains
snow and cold

uninvited
the sparrow arrives
at the wood duck’s door

a little bird house
in the great big woods
at peace in place

with a snow cap hat
waits out winter wishing
for a feathered nest.
