  5. spiritualdragonfly – Eastern Shore – I WANT OUT OF LABELS. I DON'T WANT MY WHOLE LIFE CRAMMED INTO A SINGLE WORD, OR STORY. I WANT TO FIND SOMETHING ELSE, UNKNOWABLE, SOME PLACE TO BE THAT'S NOT ON THE MAP. A REAL ADVENTURE. A MYSTERY. A BLANK. UNKNOWN. UNDEFINED"(Chuck Palahniuk) *************** So, I've started my 'ABOUT' page with this particular quote because I feel it's a pretty good fit for me. Every day of our lives is a blank slate, a new beginning that we get to fill......Each day I'm evolving, so to try and tell you who I am is going to change on any given day. One day I'm spirited and wild, the next solemn. One day I'm anxious, another I'm full of piss and vinegar. I guess you could say I am a Hodge Podge....living a sometimes beautifully chaotic, yet simple life that I choose to share with you......

Love how the branches/leaves frame the ‘house’

  6. Barbara Marincel – Minneapolis, Minnesota – My spiritual journey is all about finding the grace in the messiness of the everyday and the not so everyday. I’m a chaplain intern who loves writing and and photography. I’m also a Benedictine Oblate of St. John’s Abbey in Collegeville, MN. My creative inspirations include nature, good books, Lake Superior, my flower garden, and my faith. More than anything, I cherish spending time with friends and family.

  7. I saw your cute bird house and wondered about the nails in the tree, so I looked it up on the net:

Do nails and screws harm trees?

    Q. We have attached bird feeders, birdhouses, electrical conduit and wind chimes to our trees using galvanized deck screws that penetrate into the trunks by 1 to 1 1/2 inches. Some have just two screws; others have up to 10. Does this harm the trees? If so, what else can we use?
    -G.F., Houston

    A. Texas Forest Service’s Mickey Merritt says we should not attach objects to trees with nails, screws or anything that penetrates the outer bark. It can damage the cambium, the area just beneath the bark where cells rapidly divide and increase tree girth. It also can wound the phloem, the cells that carry nutrients from the canopy to the roots; and the xylem, the cells that transport water and nutrients to the canopy.
Puncture wounds offer easy access to insects and diseases. Vascular plants lack immune systems; when a tree is wounded, a chemical reaction takes place and the tree establishes boundaries around the wound that stop or limit the spread of disease and/or decay. This “compartmentalization,” however, breaks down if the tree is wounded again, as a newly damaged area retriggers the process.
Depending on the tree’s size, health and species and the spacing of the punctures, Merritt says, 10 holes could cause enough structural and health problems to kill the tree.

  8. bipolarsojourner – seattle area – i have struggled with episodic depression for years. i then received a diagnosis of being bipolar, only to find out i didn’t. ends up my psychiatrist really meant to say that multiple bouts of depression are often best treated like bipolar. i had already started this blog as bipolar sojourner and didn't want to switch it over. i am documenting my journeys through my depression jungle.
    bipolarsojourner says:

that’s no longer a bird house. notice the chew marks around the hole? the squirrel thought this house had location, location, location. they liked it and moved in. i think the bird must have lost their house in the sub-prime mess.

  9. Cynthia Guenther Richardson – Pacific NW – Hello fellow readers and bloggers, Writing has always been a powerful connector to diverse ideas and people. We each are a meaningful part of this beautiful, ever-widening web of life. Blogging enables more interaction, which I love even after 11 years of blogging posts on three different sites. For thirty years I was an addictions/mental health counselor and also a manager of home care services for elderly folks. Now that I have hit 70 and am more devoted to a creative life! I've published online or in literary journals/collections several times, including fiction and creative non-fiction pieces and poetry over five decades. Additionally, I was nominated for a Pushcart Prize for an excerpt of my novel-in-progress, Other than Words (the work gathering dust at present), about a mute dancer and her impact on her adopted community and a world-travelling photojournalist. I also am working on a connected set of stories about a close-knit town in northern Michigan. On Wordpress I enjoy writing about living richly despite (or because of) life's setbacks and a diagnosis of heart disease at age 51. Posts tagged "memoir" share spiritual adventures, interactions with nature, the healing of trauma's impact and challenges of writing full-time. Short stories and creative nonfiction, and poetry are favorite genres but I enjoy sharing my photography as well My hope is my offerings reflect a profound faith in God and our humanness which cloaks spiritual natures. I include myself as part of the diverse group of writers who discover and share the illuminating, positive experiences amid life's uncertainties and hardships. Let me hear from you when you visit--I appreciate your comments a great deal. Blessings and regards, Cynthia
